Financial Support for Housing

Support with a financial aid package, rent or need support with paying for the upfront cost of securing long-term housing, such as covering a housing security deposit/first month’s rent:

  • Subsidized Loans: You can access the subsidized loans available to you in your financial aid package. For information about Federal Student Aid: studentloans.gov. You can also reach out to Cal Student Central for assistance in understanding your loan/aid options. 

  • Short-Term Emergency Loan: The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office offers Short-Term Emergency Loans to graduate and undergraduate students. These interest-free loans are designed to help students meet unanticipated expenses. To apply for a short-term emergency loan, navigate to the My Finances section of CalCentral, and click on Apply for an Emergency Loan in the Financial Resources section. There is no fee to apply.

  • The Financial Aid & Scholarships Office (FASO) has an Emergency Fund for Spring ‘22: Students can apply through the Berkeley Financial Aid Forms. The student should demonstrate an emergency financial need, including loss of employment. 

    • Eligibility: 

      • Undergraduate enrolled in 6 or more units, AND Student has a Pell Grant; OR

      • Student qualifies for aid using the California Dream Act Application; AND

      • Student has a 2.0 in one of the previous three semesters*; OR 

      • Student is certified through DSP

Rental Assistance 

Students who have emergency housing needs or are experiencing financial difficulties in paying their rent may apply for short term assistance for up to one month's rent. This award is offered as part of the Basic Needs Holistic Fund which provides emergency financial assistance across various areas of basic needs.

Eligibility: Rental assistnce is available to currently enrolled UC Berkeley students (graduate, undergraduate, international, undocumented.)

Housing Security Deposit

Students who are facing severe housing insecurity and need assistance in paying security deposits to secure off- or on-campus housing may apply. This award is offered as part of the Basic Needs Holistic Fund which provides emergency financial assistance across various areas of basic needs.

Eligibility: All enrolled students (graduate and undergraduates)
