Why Basic Needs?
In Egypt, you never leave a neighbor hungry or cold. Our culture is collectivistic, and it is what I cherish most about my background. When I first moved to Berkeley, I was hundreds of miles away from home and felt alone for the first time. I found refuge at the Basic Needs Center. A village of people who reminded me of home: students and staff who believe that no person should have to struggle with finding a healthy meal or safe place to live. Not only do they believe this, but they fight for it every day. I help at the BNC because I believe that it is every person’s right to have the necessities they need, not only to survive, but to thrive.
