Why Basic Needs?
Reflecting on my journey to Basic Needs, I think about how food has always been a central component of my cultural background and experience of community. As a child of immigrant parents, I grew up listening to stories of difficulty and hardship, hopes and dreams of a better life coupled with the harsh reality of starting from nothing. But above all the hardship, there were countless recollections of happiness, moments shared with others, almost all of which are deeply connected to food. In my work at the Food Pantry, I have been able to connect my personal experience with food to service in the greater community. As a part of the BNC, I hope to contribute to the empowerment and liberation of all individuals in having their basic needs met.
