Join the UHS Nutrition Team on March 16th from 4pm to 5pm for a virtual cooking class where they will teach you how to make six easy and nutrious meals! The Basic Needs Center will be offering free ingredient kits while supplies last.

The UC Berkeley Basic Needs Center is excited to present the 2021 Hunger & Homelessness Awareness campaign from 11/15-11/19! Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is an annual program where people come together to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness. BNC will be spending the week holding a series of educational, service, fundraising, and advocacy events. Throughout the campaign, we will have fun competitions and other events about the intersection of basic needs, nutrition, housing, and more!

Food Pantry to be closed November 23rd through the 27th.

The Food Pantry is doing Pop-Up Pantries for now (future changes will be posted):

  • Location: The 1st floor of the MLK Student Union
  • Tuesdays, 3-6 PM 
  • Wednesday, 10-1 PM 
  • Thursday, 12-3 PM 
  • Fridays and Saturdays, 11-1 PM 

As we are transitioning back with students returning to campus, we will still be using a take what you need model, but can only accommodate up to one visit per week.

How do they work?

The food pantry is an emergency food resource for our UC Berkeley community. Just bring your Cal ID card to one of our Pop-Up Pantry and take what you need. As we adjust back to having the student body back on campus, we will be allowing everyone to visit a pop-up once per week.

The Food Pantry in the MLK Student Union is currently closed as we transition back into the Fall Semester. Our anticipated date of reopening will be August 24th!

Program Overview:

Food for Thought is a series of seminars offered through the Basic Needs Center in partnership with the Ethnic Studies department. Our four core courses are offered for 2 units and letter grades. With 1 unit pass/no pass credits offered to our Field Studies classes (Berkeley Food Rx and Pedagogy).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Oversee point classes and areas

  • Facilitate class and grading of assignments

Fall and Spring Course Opportunity

Come learn about healthy eating, cooking and how to maximize your food budget in a 2 unit course titled, “NST 20, Personal Food Security and Wellness”. This course is designed to support students who may lack access to nutritious and/or enough food and has been shown to improve healthy food-related behaviors such as cooking skills and confidence and eating more vegetables.
